Goal setting is an essential skill that effectively helps to add hours to your work week, and is a very worthy skill to master. The only hard part is in taking the first step and getting your first goals written down on paper. However, one critical point to take note of is to set realistic goals. A goal to earn a million dollars online when you have yet to make your first dollar will only end up frustrating yourself and making you feel extremely useless. At the same time, a goal should not be so mundane that it does not excite you at all.

Dare to think big, but make your goals within reasonable boundaries. I could write an entire book about how to tread on this thin line between the two, but in a nutshell, simply look at what others have done.

Look at someone you know and admire who has achieved what you hope to achieve, and strive to beat him at that. Once that is accomplished, look for someone of a higher standard, and repeat the process until you reach your definition of success. DO not be afraid of writing your goals down, as you can always go back to change them later on.

Of course, you should always strive to stick to your goals, but being realistic is also extremely important, and if there is a need to make any changes, do not be afraid to do so.

So go forth and add goal setting to your arsenal of weapons, and watch hours magically sprout into your workweek!

Life is short.

Don’t we all wish we can maximize the effectiveness of every minute we spend? These are the activities that cause you to wonder at the end of the day, where has all my time gone to?

The first step to correcting your time wasting habits, like all bad habits, is to identify where you have gone wrong. To that end, I urge you to try out this little experiment for a day.

Prepare a pen and a piece of paper tonight, to put by your bedside. When you wake up tomorrow morning, the experiment starts, and at the end of every hour or at intervals that better fit your schedule, note down in your notepad what you have done for the past hour.

Make this time log as detailed as possible, indicating exactly how many minutes you spend on each activity in the day. Make every minute accountable.

At the end of the day, before you go to bed, evaluate that piece of paper, and you will be amazed at how little time you actually spent on work or activities you have intended to carry out! What happened?

Look closer, and you will realize how much time you have actually spent in checking your emails, daydreaming, walking to and fro your desk, fetching drinks, replying unnecessary phone calls, gossiping, spinning your pen on your desk, deciding what to eat for lunch, and a whole bunch of other non-work related activities.

And then you will probably be so excited at this newfound knowledge that you get addicted to this activity, and at the end of a week, you would have got a firm grasp on how to identify your time wasting habits.

Then and only then, would you be able to change your habits and watch them slowly disappear from your time logs, and finally start having more fruitful and effective days!

2) Block out your time

Blocking out your time enables you to create a to-do list more effectively. It allows you to set how much time you should spend on each individual activity, and the sense of urgency prevents your mind from wandering and improves your focus.

3) Focus on one thing at a time

The power of focusing on one thing at a time is of utmost importance and ties in with the rest of the points. While multi-tasking is a common activity in today’s fast-paced world, we must be realistic and realize that many items cannot be grouped together and done simultaneously. Focusing on one thing at a time not only allows you to maintain full concentration on that one activity and allowing you to complete it fast, it also results in a high quality of work as your attention is not diverted to other issues.

4) Give yourself a break

All work and no play, makes Jack (and the rest of us) a dull boy. Workaholics often have this thinking that giving yourself a break is being too indulgent, and is something to be avoided at all costs. However, the truth is that this is not only detrimental to your health and absolutely boring, it also zaps you of the energy required to function effectively. In short, an occasional break or reward for yourself is essential.

5) Set goals

Setting goals is somewhat similar to writing a to-do list. The difference is that it instead provides you with a big picture view of your objectives. Classify your goals into short-term, middle-term and long-term for a clearer picture of what you hope to achieve.

The Right Way to Set and Achieve Your Goals

People set their goals differently, depending on their current situation, resources, physical capacity and other factors. You can, however, follow some guidelines to make sure that your goals are credible and possible. Too many individuals set their goals too high unknowingly, only to lose and get disappointed for life. Here are some tips for you.

Being Specific

Goals need to be specific, so that you know which part of the process you’re currently in and the particular ways on how you will achieve it. Most people have goals to get promoted, get rich, improve relationship and the like, but these are very vague and your mind can become confused about what you truly mean. General descriptions usually do not have boundaries, so you always leave room for mistakes and compromise. If you want results that you can be proud of, be specific.

To be specific, you need to include the full details. Write down something like, “I want to get $1 million by October of this year.” or “I need to become key supervisor of the sales division by next week.” or “I want my kids, Taylor and Chad, to become best friends beginning tomorrow.” Include the names, the position, the amount, the date and everything else needed to train your mind to start working towards that goal.

Being Measurable

Goals need to be measurable so that you can gauge how well you have done lately. To help measure your paths and goals, you should include measurable details. For your job, you can include details such as the number of hours you’re working, the amount you’re earning, the staff you’re handling, etc. For the goal of money, you can include details such as the amount you want to have as a whole, the number of companies or businesses you own, your contact persons, etc. Always have things and items to be measured so you can understand how close you are to getting your goals. If your goal is to earn $100,000 a month, then you know you’re halfway there if you’re already earning $50,000 a month.

Being Attainable and Realistic

Only set goals that can possibly be accomplished. Some people set goals that are too high to reach, that they are almost setting up things that are impossible. Make sure you only set objectives that you can reach within a given amount of time, provided the current resources and capabilities you have. Some examples of impossible goals are doubling your salary overnight, getting a promotion higher than your boss’s position, etc. Some goals can be achieved faster compared to others if you have some strengths and paths to back these up. Always include a strategic plan for big objectives.

Time-Bound

Set deadlines to achieve your goals or else you’ll never going to finish anything. Stay specific when setting timelines and schedules. For example, indicate things like “To spend an hour with my wife everyday starting tomorrow (indicate exact date and year)”. Setting the exact time and date will spur you to start working on your goals, instead of putting it off for another available time. Some goals can take years to accomplish so it is wiser to break these down into smaller objectives, still complete with deadlines. You can finish everything in a sequence to finally reach the biggest one.

When you have sleep anxiety the worst thing you can do is worry about it. While it might seem that losing sleep is a good idea, it’s one of the worst things for healthy human functioning.
